Brazil is planning to invest BRL 50 billion (USD 9.51bn/EUR 8.82bn) in transmission lines to enable the integration of more wind and solar power, energy minister Alexandre Silveira announced on Wednesday.

The ministry’s Secretary of Electric Energy, Gentil Nogueira said the country is looking to hold at least three major transmission auctions this year in order to ensure the expansion of wind and solar energy in the North of Minas Gerais state and throughout the whole Northeast region.

With this programme, the government plans to have more hybrid renewable energy complexes, which combine two distinct renewable energy parks under the same network.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of Neoenergia’s new 600-MW wind and solar hybrid generation complex in the northeastern Paraiba state.
